Nestled in the Garden Suburb Heritage Conservation Area, This single storey weatherboard Bungalow required some additional space for a couple and their young children. Only a hint of an extension is evident from the street along with an additional garage replacing the previous carport.
The clients brief was to introduce a modern extension to the existing cottage. Natural light is the most important aspect that was required of the new addition which houses new kitchen, living and dining flowing onto a generously proportioned covered deck and swimming pool area. The existing internal rooms have been modified to accommodate bedrooms and include a rearrangement of master bedroom with ensuite and walk in robe.
The external form of the building is designed with the roof to capture direct sunlight in winter and shading devices help keep the house cool in the warmer months by shading the harsh western sun and additional screening areas provide acoustic and visual privacy from neighbouring dwellings.
Lydia and Sean’s place is seen as a modern interpretation of a heritage bungalow which pays tribute to the surrounding context with its simple design and fantastic flow from the existing house through the living areas and onto the fantastic deck which will no doubt be used for large gatherings and provide countless entertaining occasions for the family to enjoy for many years to come.
