The clients brief was to create an extension to the existing single level dwelling including an upper level master bedroom suite and addition to the existing living space to open up onto a large deck which tied together the house and a new separate secondary dwelling primarily used by overseas relatives for accommodation, but also to provide an income as a short term rental accommodation.
The existing house with granny flat and carport suffered from poor natural light and were poorly planned by being located in the best position of the site. This presented an opportunity to utilise highlight windows and sky lights to fill the new spaces with natural light and a new way to organise the spatial requirements around a sunken firepit which is the heart of the project.
The firepit is surrounded by raised decking board and pool fencing that are utilised as seating for entertaining while being adjacent to the BBQ and meat smoking section of the house. This main feature is part of an open lawned area with perimeter landscaping that has created a very private area with excellent northern sun solar access that creates a private sanctuary which was a very important aspect of the brief.
Natural timber Screens provide shade and privacy throughout the house while the use of concrete and timber flooring creates a seamless flow through the entire house. The builder has retained the original concepts at the early stage of the project which is evident in the excellent execution of this hand crafted home.
